~Roasted Halibut with oven dried tomatoes and citrus glaze / Orange Blossom Mead
~Beef Shortrib braised in honey and Shiraz with gold mashed potatoes / Wildberry Pyment

    About B. Nektar Meadery:
    B. Nektar Meadery began as a home-based beer and mead operation between good friends Brad Dahlhofer and Paul Zimmerman. Theirs is a story of true entrepreneurship in the face of defeat: Brad and his wife Kerri had both been laid off from their jobs, inspiring them to open their own business selling the meads that had been winning awards at home-brewing competitions and wowing their friends. The Meadery officially opened its Ferndale location on August 2, 2008 and has since been highlighted in a number of different noteworthy publications and is carried in wine shops and restaurants all over the Midwest. But the question on everyone’s lips is, “What IS mead?” This is your chance to find out!

    About Cuisine:
Chef Paul Grosz trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris under some of the top French chefs in the world. He served as the Executive Chef at the Whitney for 10 years before opening Cuisine in 2001. Through his use of fresh, clean flavors focusing on simplicity, he creates dishes that are bold and daring – true culinary art.

Saturday, July 31: Wheelhouse Detroit Bike Brunch Tour

What varieties of flavors can you savor at the largest historic public market district in the United States?  Join Discover Detroit Dining as we partner with Wheelhouse Detroit on a brunchtime bike tour of bustling Eastern Market and discover for yourself a whole new world of imported flavors, artisanal treats, and Detroit classics!

Join us Saturday, July 31 and experience Eastern Market as you never have before.  We’ll start our tour at Wheelhouse Detroit, located in the Rivard Plaza on the beautiful Detroit Riverwalk, at 1:00PM.  From there we’ll bike through the Dequindre Cut Greenway, a non-motorized urban recreational path which connects the Riverwalk to Eastern Market and still retains much of the graffiti art the Cut was previously known for.

Once at the Market, we’ll have plenty of time to peruse the variety of shops and vendors and don’t worry – bikes will be equipped with baskets so you can take your favorites home!

Make sure you bring your appetite: we’ll start at Gabriel Import Co. for a taste of the Mediterranean: a huge selection of imported olives float in massive jars of brine, and we’ll get to sample those along with feta cheese and a variety of meat, cheese, & spinach pies as well as tabbouleh and hummus with pita bread, all made fresh daily.

From there we’ll stop by R. Hirt Jr. Co., the specialty foods market which feels like an old-fashioned general store.  They boast more than 300 different varieties of cheeses, several of which we’ll be sampling along with crackers and salami.  A cheese expert will also be on-hand to explain the different varieties and help you pick the cheese that’s right for you.

And no brunch would be complete without Bloody Marys!  Last on our culinary bike tour we’ll head to Vivio’s, a Detroit staple for 40 years which serves Bloody Marys properly, with a beer shooter.  You can even buy their famous mix!  While we’re there we’ll dig into their buckets of mussels, sampling 5 different varieties: traditional steamed with white wine, garlic & butter; Jamaican Jerk; Spicy Cajun; Pub-Style with Italian sausage, beer & red onion; and Tomato Basil with diced tomato, white wine & pesto.  There will be plenty to go around!  (Note: one Bloody Mary per person; buckets of mussels are shared.)

This all-inclusive package includes all of the tastings listed above as well as the guided tour for only $40 per person ($50 with bike rental).  Tickets are available at www.wheelhousedetroit.com.*

*Additional items throughout the Market can be purchased on an individual basis; be sure to bring cash. The tour will last approximately 3 hours. Parking is available in several nearby lots and structures.  Please wear appropriate attire for outdoor biking/walking (tennis shoes; loose, comfortable clothing).  Because of the limited number of spots available, refunds will not be issued.  We reserve the right to reschedule the tour in the event of inclement weather. Please visit www.discoverdetroitdining.com for our complete Terms of Service.

    $35.00
    ($10.00 food only, $45.00 with after-party)

Forget about Xochimilco and Los Galanes—3D Tours and Savor Southwest are taking you on a real tour of Southwest Detroit, outside of Mexicantown!  On Saturday, May 8, from 4:00-9:00PM, discover the flavors of Southwest Detroit as you never have before with “Taquerias and Tequila.”

We’ll start at Giovanna’s outdoor patio then travel down West Vernor with stops at the Mexicantown Fiesta Lounge, La Tapitata Taqueria, and Armandos. And of course, no taco tour would be complete without a trip to an authentic taco truck, and a final stop for coffee at Café con Leche.*

Tickets are $35.00 in advance and are available through the Discover Detroit Dining website at http://www.discoverdetroitdining.com/upcoming-tours/.  Tickets are all-inclusive and include drink and taco tickets.  Because we want to encourage the safety of our guests (and we know how things go when the tequila starts to flow), designated drivers are also invited to attend and will pay just $10.00 for food only.

This is an outdoor walking tour so please wear appropriate attire.  Rain or shine.  Guests are responsible for their own transportation.  Ample parking is available along W. Vernor.  We will meet first at Giovanna’s Lounge (click for map and directions).

In the aftermath of Cinco de Mayo, celebrations in Southwest Detroit will still be going strong.  Get a taste of this vibrant community with a guided tour of some of the lesser-known restaurants and watering holes and discover what makes Southwest one of Detroit’s most viable neighborhoods with plenty of restaurants, bars, street retail, and foot traffic.

For more information on this or any other event, contact me at Nicole@DiscoverDetroitDining.com

Note: Food tickets are redeemable for tacos as selected by the individual restaurants.  Guests are free to redeem tickets at whichever restaurant(s) they choose.  Drink tickets will be redeemable for house tequilas, margaritas, and anything else the venue selects.  Specialty cocktails can be purchased separately—though there should really be no need!

    Chazzano Coffee Tour
    Wednesday, April 7th
    6:00-8:00PM
    $12.00
Click here to view event details.

Did you know that coffee has 1500 unique flavor profiles?  Neither did we, until we discovered Chazzano

The next tasting tour from Discover Detroit Dining (3D Tours) will take you around the world to discover how coffee is much like a fine wine.  Fresh-roasted coffee can have notes of blueberry, cherry, wine, tobacco, apricot, almond, caramel, squash, coconut, fresh-cut flowers…and some 1500 other things, give or take!  (That’s twice as many as wine, which only has 750 flavor profiles.)

On Wednesday, April 7, 2010 from 6:00-8:00PM, we’ll be “cupping” (a roaster’s term for “tasting”) coffee alongside the talented and knowledgeable Frank Lanzkron-Tamarazo, roaster and owner of Chazzano Coffee Roasters at 1737 E. 9 Mile Rd. in Ferndale.

On an unassuming corner of 9 Mile Rd. and the I-75 service entrance sits the nondescript building which houses Chazzano Coffee Roasters.  Outside it looks drab, but inside is a fresh, modern meeting place with free WiFi and some of the best coffee in the state.  This new retail storefront has been open fewer than six months, but Chazzano has been supplying local businesses such as Bacco Ristorante in Southfield and What Crepe? in Royal Oak with their wholesale coffee since 2007.

Frank will be taking us on a tour of his facilities as well as sharing some of his extensive knowledge of the art of roasting, brewing, and cupping.  And he should know: he roasts about 8-12 thousand pounds of coffee beans every month!  His coffee is also certified Kosher by the highest authorities and is all sourced from Certified Fair Trade, organic farms.  We will discuss how the coffee transforms from the raw bean to the cup in front of you by tasting four different 5-oz. cups from South America, India, Africa, and more.

By the end of this event, you should be able to identify more than just the 2 or 3 (out of 1500!!!) flavor profiles most people can detect, as well as possess the language to describe them!

This event will cost $12.00 per person for the tour, cupping, and all the coffee you can drink.  Purchase tickets online through the Discover Detroit Dining website by Tuesday, April 6.  This event has limited capacity so get your tickets fast!  We will be meeting at Chazzano at 6:00PM sharp; guests are responsible for their own transportation.

    3D Tours presents “Brew-Ha-Ha”
    Sunday, February 21, 2010
    4:00-8:00PM
    21 & older only
Click here to view tour details.

Featuring Bastone Brewery, Kuhnhenn Brewing Co., and Sherwood Brewing Co.

    Tour Information:

For the launch Discover Detroit Dining/3D Tours outing, it’s a “Brew-Ha-Ha!”  Michigan is home to some of the most top-rated craft breweries in the world, raking in medals from top competitions such as the World Beer Cup and the Great American Beer Festival.  There are currently over 70 craft breweries in the state of Michigan, with many producing some truly astounding brews.

For 3D’s first-ever culinary tour event, we will be heading to three of our favorite local breweries to sample selections of their current brews, as well as tasting some of their signature foods.

On Sunday, February 21, 2010 beginning at 4:00PM, our first stop will be Bastone Brewery & Restaurant in Royal Oak, where guests will receive a flight of four current brews of their choice.  Bastone was awarded a Bronze in the Great American Beer Festival for their Saison du Bastone in 2009 and a Silver for their Bastone Müncher Dunkel in 2008.  In between chatting with head brewer Rockne about his award-winning creations, we’ll also sample some of their warm soft pretzels with cheese fondue dip.  Nothing goes better with beer than cheese and pretzels!

Really, though—it’s true!  Next on our journey to discover Detroit’s breweries, we’ll head over to Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. in Warren, where the brothers Kuhnhenn will be setting out eight different samples of their highly-regarded brews, including their Fourth Dementia Old Ale which took home a Bronze in this year’s Great American Beer Festival.  Notes of toffee and caramel mask the 9.5% ABV content.  Consider yourself warned!  They’ll also be serving a selection of seven different artisanal cheeses, including Danish Bleu Cheese and Tillamook White Cheddar.  Beer + cheese= win.

Last on our brew tour is the happiest place on earth: Sherwood Brewing Co.  In addition to brewing great beers (like the ultra-hoppy Green River Wheat IPA), owners Ray and Lisa Sherwood are incredibly welcoming and make every guest feel like a family member.  They’ve also made the commitment to the Slow Food ethos, incorporating fresh, seasonal, and locally-sourced products in their kitchen, and even hosting regular dinners for Slow Food Detroit.  All of their menu items are made from scratch in-house, including their sauces and dressings which they make with their own beer and wine.  As both a brewery and a restaurant, Sherwood is top-notch—which is probably why they’ve been voted WDIV’s “Best Brewpub in metro Detroit” for three years in a row (read more about them here).  They take great pride in their kitchen, and are eager to share with us some of their specialties, listed below:

~Fresh Fried Chips with housemade hummus and feta spinach dips
~BBQ Chicken Pizza with bold and spicy beer sauce
~Hand-Battered Mozzarella Triangles with garlic wine sauce
    ~Homemade Beer Ice Cream

The tour starts promptly at 4:00PM.  We will meet inside Bastone, located at 419 S. Main St.  From there the Night Move shuttle will take us to Kuhnhenn then Sherwood, and will drop us back off in Royal Oak at the parking garage located on the northwest corner of 6th & Lafayette, which is where we suggest all guests park for the event.  Parking in Royal Oak is free on Sundays.  The tour will last approximately four (4) hours.

All-inclusive tickets for this event are $50.00 which includes beer flights, food, tax, gratuity, and transportation during the tour.  Tickets are available on the Discover Detroit Dining website at www.DiscoverDetroitDining.com and are subject to availability.  Tickets must be paid for in advance in order to participate.  Seating is VERY limited—once we have reached capacity no exceptions can be made.  This event is open to guests 21 & older only.  For more information about this or other events, please contact Nicole Rupersburg at Nicole@DiscoverDetroitDining.com
